Respite Care Program
The Respite Care Program was implemented in 1985 and provides short-term, intermittent relief for the family or primary caregiver of a developmentally disabled person(s) living in their home. Respite Care is available on a planned or emergency basis. The Respite Worker brings the skills necessary to assure the family that the disabled person is safe and cared for appropriately.
Respite care is a recognition of the need “to get away” that families/primary caregivers have, and provides a means for them to do it. Respite can be used for many things such as going to the grocery store, going to scheduled appointments, running errands, a night on the town, and other activities that the family enjoys.
We currently serve about 60 families in six counties in Northern Nevada. The most common populations we serve include Cerebral Palsy, Autism/Asperger’s Syndrome, Intellectual Disability, Seizure Disorders, Medically fragile.
Our mission is to support family unity. Eliminate isolation and create a normalized life. Prevent child abuse and neglect from the unbearable stress felt by parents and caretakers and prevent unwanted placement outside the home.
Respite care is provided for each family a minimum of 4 hours per respite and a maximum of 30 hours per month.
Am I Eligible for Your Respite Program?
Families become eligible for respite services when they are caring for one or more family member(s) who:

Has (have) a doctor′s certification of a developmental disability according to the current legal definition.

Does not require intensive care by licensed nursing personnel.

Has (have) needs within the scope of current Respite staff, and are consistent with program goals and philosophy.

Funding
Funding for this program comes from donations, grants, families fee for service (income-based sliding scale), and the Nevada Children’s Foundation, Inc. Respite services for up to 30 hours per month are available to qualified families living in NW Nevada in Washoe, Carson, Lyon, Douglas, Churchill or Storey counties.
